U.S. 220 Landmark Is a Lot of Bull


A noteworthy Allegany County roadside attraction is the life-sized bull at the entrance to Wil-Mar Farms in Rawlings. 

It seems untroubled by the traffic on U.S. 220, a.k.a. the McMullen Highway, but stands watch just in case.

Wil-Mar Farms -- a cattle operation, of course -- probably was named for its husband-and-wife founders, William Harold Moran Sr. and Mary Ellen Kenny Moran. Take the first syllables of "William" and "Mary," and you get Wil-Mar.

Seek Not the Secret Room of Stafford Hall

  Many antebellum mansions have ghost stories attached – unsurprisingly, their histories being inextricable from the horrors of slavery. One such mansion in Washington County has a legend of a cursed room, but don’t expect to visit the room. In fact, best not even to look for the room. About a half-mile north of old U.S. 40 on Cohill Road, east of Clear Spring, is Stafford Hall, which the 1940 New Deal volume Maryland: A Guide to the Old Line State describes as a large, two-story brick and stone structure with nine double chimneys. It was built probably about 1835 by Judge John Thompson (1815-73), descendant of Colonel George Mason who came from Staffordshire, England, about 1651. Mass Squirrel "Migration" Drove Folks Nuts

  This brief 1897 newspaper item may look like a tall tale, or evidence of some paranormal Pied Piper among Western Maryland squirrels, but it actually documents a well-known, now-rare natural phenomenon. Migrating Squirrels. As evidence of the theory that squirrels migrate, a novel scene was witnessed on Saturday in the upper portion of Washington County along the Potomac River. A drove of squirrels, of which eye-witnesses estimated there were at least three thousand, swarmed across the country. Their flight was soon discovered, and about three hundred of them were killed by men and boys.
